Global MOOC and Online Education Conference
Sub-forum : The Era of Higher Education Digital Transformation: Improving Digital Literacy for University Teachers
Background
In Beyond Limits: New Ways to Reinvent Higher Education, published by UNESCO during the third World Higher Education Conference (WHEC2022), it was forecast that in a new ecosystem of higher education, lifelong learning and flexible learning expect to become the mainstream learning pattern; technological advances will be an essential medium for stakeholder empowerment; the digital transformation of university teachers' capacity will serve as a priority agenda to improve education quality. Therefore, cultivating university teachers' digital literacy and supporting teachers to use technology effectively are crucial steps to realise inclusive and high-quality online and blended teaching and learning (OBTL), reshaping the existing models of curriculum development and assessment, and improving the institution's overall quality and efficiency.
Education and technological progress are not static phenomena confined to a particular era or location. Faced with the global trend of digital transformation, numerous local initiatives that integrate the teaching profession has emerged to improve teachers' digital literacy. In this regard, the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI) and the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) will co-host the Sub-forum 4 of the Global MOOC and Online Education Conference (GMOEC) 2022, themed "The Era of Higher Education Digital Transformation: Improving Digital Literacy for University Teachers." Global experts, practitioners, and relevant higher education stakeholders with diverse backgrounds will share their research findings or best practices for enhancing the digital literacy of university teachers given the trend of higher education digital transformation.
Specific goals include:
• To discuss both positive and negative impact of digital technology development on the higher education ecology.
• To summarise the background, necessity, and feasible approaches to enhance digital literacy among teachers, including university teachers.
• To call for potential international collaborations on promoting digital transformation in higher education and enhancing the digital literacy of university teachers.
