The Second Session of the First Governing Board of International Centre for Higher Education Innovation (ICHEI) under the auspices of UNESCO was successfully held in Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) on November 26, 2017. Mr. GAO Zimin, Deputy Mayor of Shenzhen Municipality and newly appointed Chair of the Governing Board of ICHEI, hosted the meeting. Also present at the meeting were Mr. DU Yue, Secretary-General of the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO, Mr. CHEN Yidan, Core Founder and Adviser Emeritus of Tencent, Founder and Honorary Chairman of Tencent Charity Foundation, Mr. CHEN Shiyi, President of SUSTech, Mr. Freddy Boey, Vice President of Nanyang Technological University, Mr. XU Jianling, Deputy Director of the Bureau of Education of Shenzhen Municipality and Mr. LI Ming, Director of ICHEI.
The meeting announced the adjustment of Shenzhen Government’s representative in the Governing Board of ICHEI. Due to the adjustment in division of work among Shenzhen municipal leadership, Mr. GAO Zimin, who is in charge of educational affairs, was appointed the new Chair of the Governing Board of ICHEI.
The participating Members of the Governing Board fully acknowledged the work ICHEI had done in 2017, and spoke highly of the influence that ICHEI exerted internationally. The Members also offered their insights and suggestions on ICHEI’s Work Plan for 2018 and the Mid-term Strategic Plan.
- Mr. DU Yue suggested that the Centre should think about how to build an international image and make greater contributions to global management under the UNESCO system.
- Mr. CHEN Yidan said that the cooperation between ICHEI and high-tech enterprises could be one of the focuses of ICHEI’s future development, and might hold an important position in the scientific and educational development in the Great Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.
- Mr. CHEN Shiyi suggested that the Centre should make better use of the human resources in SUSTech by appointing contact person in departments and schools.
- Mr. Freddy Boey thought that the Centre should make the best use of ICT-related educational resources and he also expressed his willingness to share some of the enterprise resources he knew.
- Mr. XU Jianling pointed out that the Centre should attach great importance to high quality academic publications, especially English publications.
- Mr. LI Ming thanked the Members for their pertinent suggestions on behalf of ICHEI and hoped that they will actively pay attention to the projects and activities of ICHEI in the next few years.
Mr. GAO Zimin concluded the major issues of the meeting. He proposed that the Centre should dynamically update its work plan and strategic plans and specify the major points in great detail.
